THE TANNERY

THE TANNERY

WHERE OUR LEATHER COMES FROM

We choose to work with a small family owned tannery as our main supplier. It was founded in 1987 in the Santa Croce area between Florence and Pisa. The leathers they provide are very soft and high in quality.

When roccamore was founded, it was here we were first able to get leather in unique bright colours, left behind by luxury brands. Perceived as waste because of overproduction or a slightly different tint than requested, the leathers were too good to be burned. We loved the concept of giving new life to those materials, and thus helping the tannery make use of its leftover stock.

RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION

The tannery works with chrome tanning. Although it is a small establishment with traditional methods, they use high quality tanning agents, and are even powered by solar panels! They also collect the rainwater directly to use it in the production.

As the process is finished, the wastewater is led in tubes to a central recycling plant for the Santa Croce area. There, the chemicals are separated from the waste water and the water is reused for a new batch of leathers.

THE FUTURE OF LEATHER

We are weekly in contact with Lorenzo, one of the 3 brothers who run the factory as the second generation. It is a pleasure to work with these young entrepreneurs, who are open minded, care for the future and are always open to suggestions on sustainable initiatives.
